Mid-Career Award
The SIGecom Mid-Career Award recognizes outstanding individuals whose contributions have had great impact in the field of economics and computation. The contributions may be theoretical or empirical advances or demonstrated applications at the interface of economics and computation. The award includes a $2500 honorarium, an award certificate of recognition, and an invitation for the recipient to present a keynote talk at the EC Conference. The award is made to an individual who received a PhD within the past 18 years and who began employment as a faculty member or full-time industrial researcher within the past 15 years (or equivalent duration in case of career interruption). The award is presented to a single individual in even-numbered years.
Eligibility. Awardees for the SIGecom Mid-Career Award must have accrued:
- A sustained level of research contribution over time, with clear impact in economics and computation
- Significant contributions to the community, such as organizing workshops, tutorials, newsletters, diversity and inclusion initiatives, program committee memberships, etc.
Nomination Procedure. Anyone in the economics and computing research community may nominate a candidate. To do so, please send nominations to sigecom-midcareeraward@googlegroups.com by January 9, 2023; the committee may extend the deadline beyond this date at its discretion, but all nominations will be held to the same cutoff date. Nominations should be for a single individual; groups of researchers and self nominations will not be considered. In selecting the winner, the committee pays particular attention to a sustained record of high-impact contributions to the interface of computing and economics.
Nominations must include:
- A brief statement indicating the candidate's eligibility, stating the date upon which they received a PhD, the date upon which they began employment as a faculty member or full-time industrial researcher. Candidates who experienced no career interruptions are eligible if they received a PhD on or after July 1, 2004 and began their first full-time position on or after July 1, 2007. Documentation of these dates must be provided (e.g., a CV stating the appropriate dates). Exceptions will be made for formal career interruptions (e.g., parental leaves; medical leaves; etc); in such cases, the eligibility statement should give the calculation explicitly and provide documentation.
- Suggested citation if the candidate is selected. This should be a concise statement (maximum of 15 words) describing the key technical or professional accomplishment for which the candidate merits this distinction. Note that the final wording will be at the discretion of the committee.
- A statement explaining the candidate's most significant research accomplishments and contribution to the SIGecom community (limited to 1000 words).
- A list of at least 3 and at most 5 of the candidate's specific publications epitomizing the significance and lasting impact of the candidate's accomplishments, with a short statement describing each publication (limited to 100 words) and either a link to an online version of the publication or a copy of the publication itself.
- A list of two endorsers with personal knowledge of the candidate's work that the committee can contact for further information if deemed necessary.
Criteria for Selection. The winner is selected by a Prize Committee consisting of three people appointed by the SIGecom Chair; see below for the composition of the 2023 committee. Candidates will be evaluated based on their impact on the field of economics and computation.
Each nominator will be notified of the committee's decision. If unsuccessful, the nominator will have the option to roll over (a possibly updated version of) the nomination for the following two selection cycles, provided a candidate remains eligible
